In today’s world, technology is everywhere—shaping how we live, work, connect, and make decisions. But while it often presents itself as neutral and objective, the reality is far more complicated. Technology doesn’t just exist in a vacuum. It’s shaped by human biases, historical inequities, and the same power structures that have impacted our society for generations.

That’s why I created The Miseducation of Technology. The name itself is a call to action—a reminder that we must unlearn the myths we’ve been told about technology being purely good, progressive, or fair. It draws inspiration from Lauryn Hill’s iconic album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which challenged us to rethink harmful narratives and reclaim our own stories. It also echoes Carter G. Woodson’s groundbreaking work, The Mis-Education of the Negro, which exposed how education systems were used to uphold systemic inequities.

In the same way, this podcast challenges us to rethink how we’ve been taught to understand technology. Just as Lauryn Hill’s album called for personal liberation and Woodson’s work demanded intellectual freedom, this podcast calls for digital liberation. We’re breaking down the myths of technological neutrality, confronting the biases embedded in digital systems, and, most importantly, figuring out how to make technology work for us—not against us.

🔥 What Makes This Podcast Different

This isn’t just another tech podcast where we geek out over the latest gadgets or obsess over Silicon Valley trends. We’re here to dig deeper and have real conversations about how technology impacts our lives—especially when it perpetuates harm or reinforces discrimination.

But we don’t just stop at identifying the problems. The Miseducation of Technology is about action and empowerment. Each episode goes beyond critique to give you practical steps and solutions. Whether it’s understanding how algorithms are biased, learning to beat AI hiring systems, or figuring out how to protect your privacy from invasive data collection, we’re equipping you with real-world strategies to navigate and reclaim technology.

Guided by the wisdom of Hosea 4:6“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”—we aim to arm you with the knowledge and tools needed to challenge flawed systems and take back control. This podcast is designed to help you understand the truth behind the tech while also giving you the skills to make it work for your life and community.

📚 Setting the Stage: Foundational Episodes

Our foundational episodes are the backbone of this podcast, setting the stage for understanding both the challenges and the solutions when it comes to technology and bias. These episodes are not just about pointing out what’s wrong—they’re about equipping you with the tools to challenge flawed systems and make technology work in your favor.

Episode 1: Setting the Stage – What Does It Mean for Technology to Be Miseducated? (Published)

Our debut episode dives into the foundational question: What does it mean for technology to be miseducated?

Technology often presents itself as objective, neutral, and inherently progressive. But the reality is far more complicated. Algorithms and AI systems are built on data shaped by human decisions, meaning they reflect the same biases, inequities, and power structures that have shaped society for generations. From facial recognition systems that misidentify Black faces to AI hiring algorithms that disadvantage marginalized candidates, technology can perpetuate the same harmful stereotypes and inequalities that have been embedded in our history.

But this episode doesn’t just reveal the problem—it equips listeners with the critical insight needed to challenge these flawed assumptions. We introduce the podcast’s mission to uncover the hidden ways technology perpetuates harm and to empower listeners to reclaim tech as a tool for equity. Through real-world examples and clear explanations, we highlight how historical discrimination—like redlining and over-policing—has been digitized into today’s systems. Most importantly, we lay out the practical strategies you can use to navigate and challenge biased tech.

Episode 2: The New Jim Code – Discrimination in the Digital Age (Published)

In Episode 2, we dive deeper into a concept I call The New Jim Code—how artificial intelligence modernizes discrimination while presenting itself as efficient and objective.

We discuss real-world examples, like Robert Williams’ wrongful arrest due to flawed facial recognition software, biased mortgage algorithms that deny Black families home ownership, and predictive policing systems that disproportionately target communities of color. These are not just glitches—they’re manifestations of how systemic biases are encoded into digital tools.

But we don’t just point out the flaws. This episode empowers listeners by exploring actionable ways to disrupt harmful systems and advocate for fairness in AI. You’ll learn how to challenge biased tech practices, demand accountability, and use your voice to push for more equitable technology policies.

Episode 3: Black Labor and Automation – The Future of Work in the Digital Age

Automation is transforming industries, and the Black labor force is at significant risk of displacement. Jobs in sectors like manufacturing, transportation, and retail—where many Black workers are employed—are increasingly automated, leading to growing concerns about income inequality and stable employment.

But this episode doesn’t just highlight the risks—it provides solutions. We discuss how to proactively prepare for the future of work through upskilling and reskilling opportunities. We also explore advocacy for equitable workforce policies that ensure Black workers aren’t left behind in the digital economy. By the end of the episode, you’ll have a clear understanding of the stakes and practical tools to thrive in an automated world.

Episode 4: Are You Being Tracked? Protecting Your Digital Privacy in a Surveillance Economy

The surveillance economy is everywhere, from tracking pixels in emails to smartphone GPS logs and web cookies that monitor your every move. Big Tech profits from collecting and monetizing your data, often without your explicit knowledge or consent.

This episode not only uncovers how surveillance shapes your online experience but also gives you actionable steps to protect your digital privacy. We discuss using privacy-focused browsers, blocking trackers, and limiting app permissions to regain control over your data. We also explore why digital privacy matters and how unchecked surveillance can manipulate behavior and narratives.

Episode 5: Cracking the Code – Beating AI in Hiring

The job market is increasingly shaped by AI-powered applicant tracking systems (ATS), which screen resumes before they reach a human recruiter. Unfortunately, these systems often reinforce existing biases, favoring white male candidates while sidelining women, people of color, and nontraditional applicants.

In this episode, we break down how these systems work and why they are prone to bias. More importantly, we offer practical tips to optimize your resume for ATS, avoid common formatting pitfalls, and leverage networking to bypass digital gatekeepers. Drawing on real-world examples like Amazon’s flawed hiring AI, this episode equips you with the knowledge to level the playing field and succeed in today’s competitive job market.

Episode 6: Regulating the Wild West – Social Media and the Law

Social media platforms have become central to public discourse, but their lack of accountability has allowed the spread of misinformation, polarization, and even voter suppression. At the heart of this problem is Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects platforms from liability for content posted by users, allowing them to operate with minimal regulation.

In this episode, we break down how social media regulation—or the lack thereof—impacts Black communities and why reforms are needed to address issues like targeted disinformation campaigns. We also discuss the growing movement to hold platforms accountable while balancing freedom of speech with the need for fairness and transparency.
